Nat King Cole: Born March 17, 1919
The first part of Nat Cole’s life and work on Nancy Wilson’s NPR Jazz Profile wisely and rightly focuses on Nat Cole, the exceptionally articulate and inventive jazz pianist who influenced most of those who followed him even though he was a singer on the pops charts by the time his disciples made it.

Nat King Cole: Nat King Cole: ‘The Singer’
Nancy Wilson hosts this NPR Jazz Profile on Nat King Cole. It’s the second part of Cole’s life and begins in 1948 as Nat’s voice and hit sings all but eclipse his magnificent piano playing and his near perfect trio. We’ve all gotten so much joy from his remarkable music and, from my research while creating the Mosaic Complete Capitol Trio box, I came to feel as if I knew this kind, gentle, charming gentleman.

Was Nat King Cole ever less than perfect?
I was pleased to open this holiday gift: a Nat King Cole vocal gem, this time with just his trio backing. A textbook example of Nat Cole’s signature alchemy of enveloping warmth and immaculate vocalism. Thanks, Marc Myers, for the shout in JazzWax, via Dick dePalma, record producer and family friend of Nat King Cole.
