“While Mosaic never does wrong, this set is absolutely perfect. Three CDs of Andrew Hill, almost all of it previously unheard by the public. While these sessions probably sat in the vaults to lack of commercial viability at the time, they are every bit as good as Hill's contemporary Blue Note releases that have been released. Some of the lineups are chock full of heavy hitter sidemen- Sam Rivers, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, etc. Overall the set is a good indicator of the diversity of Hill's compositonal ideas in the late 60s. He is heard in large group settings, trio settings, and most amazingly working with a string quartet. I find the string quartet sessions to be the most remarkable on the set.” - Customer Review

Barry Altschul: Both Sides of Now

Drummer Barry Altschul, who turned 70 earlier this month (he celebrated at Roulette in Brooklyn), has made a lot of great music both outside and inside, with the likes of Dave Holland, Sam Rivers, Anthony Braxton, Chick Corea and Jon Irabegon. Altschul shared some of what he’s seen from both vantage points with Hank Shteamer, in Burning Ambulance.

Sam Rivers Trio - Amazing Music On A Consistently High Level

Some of my fondest musical memories from the ‘70s was seeing and hearing the Sam Rivers Trio with Dave Holland and Barry Altschul on dozens of occasions. Three of my favorite people making amazing music on a consistently high level. Kevin Whitehead covers the CD of their 2007 reunion concert on Fresh Air and points out something I hadn’t realized – how woefully underrecorded they were back then. What were we all thinking?
