Curtis Fuller – Forgotten Gem
It is astonishing how much fresh, brilliant jazz is recorded in any given year. Conversely, much of it never gets the recognition and exposure it deserves and fades from the public consciousness, patiently awaiting rediscovery. Marc Myers picked a doozy on his Jazz Wax blog – Curtis Fuller’s ambitious 1962 album “Cabin In The Sky” with amazing arrangement by Manny Albam. I remember passing this album over in the bins when it first came out because I thought anything with an organ or an orchestra was commercial and beneath me. Of course, all that changed over the decades. Marc has flagged one that I never revisited. Nice move!
