Soul Jazz: the Tasty Ingredients
So-called soul jazz brought the audience back to this music in the mid fifties and its universal appeal has remained an important musical and commercial element in jazz every since. One could quibble with the selection of the five examples offered here on this NPR take five feature, but it’s all great in-the-pocket music. It’s ironic and telling that the most soulful piece of these five is “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” written and played by an Austrian immigrant, Joe Zawinul.
