Eddie Lockjaw Davis
Eddie Lockjaw Davis was a magnificent tenor saxophonist and this Marc Myers piece revisits his wonderful late ‘50s band with organist Shirley Scott. Jaws was a soulful swing-oriented musician with a big sound and a gruff growl. He was also a consummate business man who once quit performing to become a booking agent at Shaw Artists before a call from Basie had him unpacking his tenor again. A one-of-a-kind. On a van ride from Geneva to Montreux in the ‘70s, he told me, “The key to jet lag is to never change your watch…..But that’s not an excuse to be late wherever you are.”
