Stan Kenton’s Festival Of Modern Jazz
Stan Kenton was a chronic entrepreneur whose leadership reached beyond his orchestra to include producing records, a publishing company and promoting mini-jazz festivals. Doug Ramsey revisits his 1954 Festival Of Modern Jazz with a diverse bill that included Art Tatum, Charlie Ventura and Shorty Rogers. This was the time of the Kenton’ “Showcase” band with Lee Konitz and a healthy stack of charts from arrangers (and band members) Bill Russo and Bill Holman.
