Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans and Philly Joe Jones: with Lenny Bruce
This is an amazing kinescope of a television show that I’ve never heard of before. Lenny Bruce introduces Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans and Philly Joe Jones, then talks about a painting that he photographed at the Museum Of Modern Art which is then shown in sections as the band improvises a very cool blues.

The Singular Sound of Yusef Lateef
Doug Ramsey provides a link to a two-hour edition of Nick Spitzer’s wonderful syndicated radio show“American Routes”. Robert Randolph, Clifton Chenier, Aaron Neville, Lena Horne and the amazing 92-year-old Yusef Lateef are covered on this wonderful program. Doug also unearthed a 1963 kinescope of Yusef playing the blues (on oboe!) with the Cannonball Adderley sextet. The rhythm section is Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes.

Soul Jazz: the Tasty Ingredients
So-called soul jazz brought the audience back to this music in the mid fifties and its universal appeal has remained an important musical and commercial element in jazz every since. One could quibble with the selection of the five examples offered here on this NPR take five feature, but it’s all great in-the-pocket music. It’s ironic and telling that the most soulful piece of these five is “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” written and played by an Austrian immigrant, Joe Zawinul.
