Clarke-Boland: Jazz is Universal
It’s true the Big Bands didn’t just stop after World War II and there were some that made an impact on the jazz scene well after Elvis and Rock n’ Roll dominated the pop charts. JazzWax takes a look at some of the outstanding post-war big band jazz units including the powerful ensemble led by drummer Kenny Clarke and pianist Francy Boland.

Andy Bey and sisters Salome and Geraldine worked together in the mid ’60s and recorded several albums for Prestige. They always seemed on the verge of success, but never quite got there. This unusual clip is from a 1964 Paris appearance. They perform Arnett Cobb’s “Smooth Sailing” with none other than Kenny Clarke on drums.
