Eugene Smith’s amazing tapes of rehearsals and jam sessions at his Manhattan loft, has written this very detailed and poignant essay on the life and death of the great, almost forgotten pianist Sonny Clark. This is a must read, accompanied by a great Francis Wolff photo of Clark and Dexter Gordon.

Buddy DeFranco, Sonny Clark and bebop
Marc Myers of Jazz Wax inteviewed Buddy DeFranco in 2010 about his illustrious career in bebop which began with his quartet featuring Kenny Drew and Art Blakey which in 1954 evolved into a wonderful quartet with Sonny Clark which also included Tal Farlow for a time. It was a great band and was the subject of one of Mosaic’s earliest sets.
