Special thanks to Johnny Smith for his co-operation and assistance and Ian Pickavance for uncovering so many tapes that were once thought lost.

Producer’s note:
This set collects all of Johnny Smith’s small group albums for Roost. His two albums with string orchestra (My Dear Little Sweetheart and Guitar And Strings) and his collaborations with vocalists Ruth Price, Beverly Kenney and Jeri Southern, all done for Roost, are of a very different musical nature and outside the scope of this set.
Although we were fortunate to find excellent sources on most of this material, a few comments are necessary. Disc one, track 20 was dubbed from a very worn 78 and the next four songs were dubbed from 10” LP. The only existing master for LP 2203, which is found on the first ten tracks of disc three was dubbed from a 12” LP in 1958 and, as a result, some wow can be heard in places. On track 9 (Tired Blood), a poorly repaired edit cases a jump in the time at 3:14.
Minor incidences of static, peak distortion and other imperfections occur intermittently throughout these sessions.
