THE COMPLETE CHICK WEBB & ELLA FITZGERALD
DECCA SESSIONS (1929-1941)

For the purposes of this discography, only the first release of each matrix is listed. All titles in this discography were released initially on 78 except where noted. Non-U.S. releases are abbreviated (Aus) for Australia and (E) for England.

All New York sessions were recorded at the Brunswick (later Decca) Studios, 799 Seventh Avenue, until sometime in 1936 when Decca moved to 50 West 57th Street. The Los Angeles session was recorded at 5505 Melrose Avenue and the Chicago session at 666 South Lake Shore Dr.

To the best of our knowledge, the titles listed in this discography are presented in the order in which they were recorded. However, the CDs contained in this boxed set are presented with the master take first and then any corresponding alternate at the end of the disc. Alternate takes that have been reported in discographies but which are found neither as metal parts in the vaults nor as test or commercial pressings in the various institutional and private collections that we have canvassed, are shown here as unissued, master no longer exists.
Source material used to compile this discography include Chick Webb Ė Rhythm Man by Frank Driggs (Hep CD1023), Ella Fitzgerald: An Annotated Discography by J. Wilfred Johnson (McFarland & Co), Ella Fitzgerald Ė The Complete Masters by Francois Le Xuan & Alain Tercinet (Universal Music Classics & Jazz France), Ella Fitzgerald: The Chick Webb Years & Beyond by Ron Fritts and Ken Vail (Scarecrow Press), The Jazz Discography by Tom Lord (Cadence Jazz Books), Jazz Records 1897-1942 Fifth Edition by Brian Rust (Storyville), interviews collected from the Jazz Oral History Project housed at The Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University and in conversations with Van Alexander, Steven Lasker and Dan Morgenstern.
Record label abbreviations are as follows: Br for Brunswick; Dec for Decca and Voc for Vocalion.

Note: -A and -B takes were recorded for each of the titles above, however, it is not known which take was used for release matrices E36432 and E36434. The -C shown on later issues of matrix E36432 is not an actual take but a dub of possibly -A.

The flip side of Brunswick 6156 is by the Blue Rhythm Boys and is not included here in this set.

-1 Either a clarinet or bass clarinet is played by Clark, Sampson or Williams.

Note: One of Webbís arrangers during this period was George Bassman and he might be responsible for some of the arrangements in this set.

Although discographies list either Claude Jones or Nat Story in the trombone section, its possible that Fernando Arbello had participated in this session on the basis that he is included in a personnel listing of the Webb band from the June 1, 1935 issue of Down Beat and is also seen in a picture from outside the Savoy Ballroom on June 25, 1935.

Note: As with Session (H), there seems to be more than one clarinet present (heard on Youíll Have To Swing It), yet it is not known, other than Clark, who doubles.

Itís possible that titles without arranger credits shown from this session onward may have been penned by Teddy McRae. He was also responsible for writing some charts under Fitzgeraldís leadership after Webbís death.

62073-A That Naughty Waltz (CD-arr)           -

Note: Wake Up And Live vocal credit on Decca 1213 as The Webb Trio.

Some sources claim Teddy McRae is the arranger of You Showed Me The Way.

Matrices 62070 and 62071 are by Louis Armstrong with Andy Iona and his Islanders and were recorded on the same day. Itís possible that matrices 62064 through 62069 were recorded first, then the two Armstrong sides, followed by matrices 62072 and 62073. It should be noted that a Dick Robertson session with matrices 62074 through 62077 were also recorded on the same day.

Producerís Note: Although the bulk of this set focuses on the Decca recordings led both by Chick Webb and Ella Fitzgerald during the years 1934 through 1941, we have also included the Webb band sides for Brunswick and Vocalion since these, like Decca, are owned by Universal Music. From 1942 on, Ellaís recorded output for Decca included mostly non-Webb band mates and is not part of this package. However, we have decided to include the two Ella Fitzgerald / Mills Brothers sides from 1937 since they fall within the timeline of this set.

We were unable to obtain mint condition sources for the following matrices:
62067-B You Showed Me The Way
62213-A All Over Nothing At All
62216-A Deep In The Heart Of The South
63706-A We Canít Go On This Way
63709-B (Iíve Been) Saving Myself For You
64573-A F. D. R. Jones
64574-A I Love Each Move You Make
66137-A Iím Not Complaininí
67119-A Is There Somebody Else?
67122-A Whatís The Matter With Me?
68559-A Hello Ma! I Done It Again
68560-A Wishful Thinking
68894-A Keep Cool, Fool
68895-A No Nothing
69876-A You Donít Know What Love Is
69906-A Iím Thrilled
Some problematic areas also arose on matrix 64576 which has a faulty start that is evident on all copies.

When the original recordings of this set initially appeared on Decca, most, if not all, did not run at the correct pitch. Therefore, we have speed corrected each track; a normal procedure in the Mosaic transferring process.

We have not been able to obtain a copy of the rare Vocalion release of heebie jeebies<XC> and soft and sweet<XC> found in Session (C). And although re-released on Brunswick 78s, both titles suffer from inconsistent speed and inferior sound. However, we were able to locate a copy of heebie jeebies<XC> on the British 78 label Panachord which thankfully was a master pressing.

Special thanks go to bandleader and arranger Van Alexander, who at the time of this printing will have reached his 98th birthday (b. May 2, 1915). Van was helpful in determining arranger credits for this set and with personnel / instrumentation of the Webb band. He is the sole surviving member of this organization and we are indebted to him for his assistance. www.vanalexander.com

This set is dedicated to a special Ella Fitzgerald fan, Catherine Delia Wenzel.

The CDs in this package include a variety of sources. Since the metal parts were not made available to us (they have yet to be unpacked and catalogued at their new home in the Library of Congress) we have transferred mint 78s, vinyl test pressings from the John R.T. Davies Collection and Decca CDs from the 1990s that utilized metal mothers transferred by Steven Lasker and restored by Erick Labson. Other sources for this set include some tracks from a recently released French Universal (referred to as Uni) boxed set of Ella Fitzgerald.

Below is a listing of sources used for this release. VT refers to a vinyl test pressing. All other sources are identified by their label and catalog number (in many cases, an overseas copy with a different catalog number will trump the original American issue). Many of the CD issues used as source copies were taken from the original metal parts. The designation Br / Dec refers to British releases that have labels with the Decca logo pasted over the original Brunswick logo.
