DISCOGRAPHY
For the purposes of this discography, only the first catalog number of each matrix is listed.

Since the order of recording on Commodore is unknown we have opted to follow the same format as Mosaic’s three volumes of The Complete Commodore Jazz Recordings by presenting them in the order in which the original producer Milt Gabler felt were the best takes. The numbers shown in parenthesis indicate Milt’s order of preference for release (#2 is his second choice for release, #3 his third choice for release, etc). The Decca sessions are shown here in chronological order. The CDs contained in this set are sequenced with the master takes of each title first and then any alternates at the end of the disc.

Any sides that have been shown in discographies but are missing from the vaults or possibly in private collections are listed as unissued, master no longer exists. If a title is shown as unissued this means that the performance does exist but it is not included in this package because of damage to the original disc or because of space limitations has forced us to include only the most exceptional alternate take. If a second title is shown in brackets, this designates an alternate or more commonly known title yet is not printed on the original label.

These sessions were recorded in New York City at the Brunswick Studios on 1776 Broadway; the Decca Studios on 50 West 57th Street; Liederkranz Hall at 111 E. 58th Street; Reeves Sound Studios on 304 E. 44th Street; WOR Studios on 1440 Broadway; and at the World Broadcasting System, 711 5th Avenue.

The following reference materials used for this discography were The Decca Labels by Michel Ruppli (Greenwood Press, 1996), The Jazz Discography by Tom Lord (Cadence Jazz Books), The Complete Commodore Jazz Recordings: A Discography by Vincent Pelote and the three discographies that accompanied our Mosaic-Commodore LP sets compiled by Michael Cuscuna (via research from Milt Gabler’s original session notes).

Label Abbreviations: Com for Commodore, DC for Dawn Club, Dec for Decca and JA for Jazz Archives.
Country Codes: (Can) for Canada, (G) for Germany.

Take letter abbreviations include BD for breakdown, inc reh for incomplete rehearsal, NG for no good and PB for playback.

Note: Matrix P-22440-1 is listed in discographies as being from February 17, 1938. However, it seems unlikely that the trio came back exactly a month later just to record another take of i got rhythm<XC> (it’s possible that February 17, 1938 is the date when this particular take was processed as a test pressing). There are no other matrices in the Commodore catalog that carry numbers in the 22400 series.

Some copies of Commodore 502 have the labels reversed.

Producer’s Note:
The vision of this set was to present all of the sessions led by Eddie Condon and Bud Freeman for both the Commodore and Decca labels.

The quality of the source material will differ from track to track as we have utilized the best sounding mint 78s, lacquer discs and Decca CDs (these CDs contain transfers from the original lacquers). In some cases we were fortunate to obtain Australian Decca 78s which contain a smoother surface than the U.S. Deccas of this period. We also have speed corrected each track; a normal procedure in the Mosaic transferring process.

We’ve made efforts to determine whether Bobby Hackett and Max Kaminsky play either cornet or trumpet to the best of our ability. The same holds for Brad Gowans when playing trombone, valve trombone or valide.
