The date is usually listed in discographies as June 15, 1939, however, the original file cards and ledgers state the above date with a start time as 1:00 P.M.

There is a discrepancy between which take of W 24777 surfaced on a 78 issued in Switzerland (Columbia DZ-545). Discographies show the take as -2, however, it has been confirmed that -1 was the issued take. What is commonly seen in discographies is that -1 was first released on Columbia CL 1780.

Swingin’ At The Lido plays as Havin’ A Ball and Havin’ A Ball plays as Swingin’ At The Lido on Columbia CL 1780 (LP).

Producer’s Note: The vision of this set was to present all of the sessions led by Johnson now owned by Sony Music plus any sideman sessions where there’s a solo of some length or a worthy obbligato by Johnson.

Discographies list the Ethel Waters session of August 23, 1928 and the Clara Smith session of September 4, 1929 as having James P. Johnson as an accompanist. However, the Waters session has both J.C. Johnson and Clarence Williams as being present and for the Smith session it is believed to be another pianist who has not been positively identified. The Clarence Williams date of January 15, 1930 is also a questionable James P.  Johnson entry and is not included here.  The sides led by Yank Lawson and Eddie Condon on Signature offer some solo space for Johnson but due to space limitations they are not included here.

Although the sound quality of these sessions will differ from track to track, we have made every effort to obtain the best possible source material, whether it be the original metal parts, test pressings or commercially released 78s. Therefore, the CDs in this package include a variety of sources. Of particular interest is the unissued material from the Ida Cox date (Session ZZ) where we had access to Phil Schaap’s reel to reel tape that was a dub of the original 16” lacquer disc. We also found that with Session (YY) there were problems with the original cutting machine that caused speed issues with the beginning of most of the performances.

Listed below is a listing of sources used for this release. P refers to a positive (clockwise spinning) metal part while N refers to a negative (counterclockwise spinning) metal part. T refers to a test pressing. RTR refers to a ¼” reel to reel tape. All other sources come from the original 78s unless otherwise noted and are identified by their label and catalog number.
