PRODUCER”S NOTE
Vibes are not the easiest instrument to capture on tape and the Modern Jazz Quartet’s considerable dynamic range doesn’t ease matters. So there are tracks with some peak distortion when an engineer got brave with levels and there are others with tape hiss when he became overly prudent.
This set begins at the beginning of 1956 with the group’s first session for Atlantic Records and chronicles the 14 studio albums that they recorded through the end of 1964. This was a period of intensely creative compositional and conceptual innovation for the group and marks a logical cutoff point for this set.
The early albums are plagued by mono/stereo issues. For example, the stereo masters on sessions A & B are very poorly recorded and we have opted for the far superior mono masters. Two tunes on the stereo master are different performances. The stereo masters for session C have a terrible hum so we again opted for the mono tapes. There is a stereo alternate of Sun Dance. These and other alternate takes generated by different mono and stereo masters appear at the end of disc six which is the only CD that was not yet fully loaded.
For reasons of size and repetition of repertoire, we have not included the live recordings from the spring 1960 European tour, released as European Concert and Dedicated to Connie, both of which are or have been available on CD. In 1965, the quartet recorded Jazz Dialogue, a studio album which revisited older material with big band backdrops. This was followed by a succession of live albums which, while excellent, introduced little new repertoire and broke no new ground. So the Porgy And Bess album seemed the logical stopping point.
