Freddie Hubbard came to New York in 1960 and scared the hell out of every trumpet player in town. He came equipped with a big tone, a unique melodic conception and an amazing technique. Before long, he was a Blue Note recording artist and a featured member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
In the early ‘70s, Hubbard became a best-selling jazz artist with a succession of highly produced albums on the CTI label. On the road, he would perform many of his CTI recordings in a more direct, straight-ahead jazz style. On this 1973 concert, he and his quintet with Junior Cook, George Cables, Kent Brinkley and Michael Carvin stretch out on three of his greatest compositions of the period: Straight Life, The Intrepid Fox and First Light. This was one of Hubbard's best groups of the era, but it only made one recording (CTI's Keep Your Soul Together).

Hubbard and Junior Cook share a common ground and deep empathy and the rhythm section led by Cables give the hormen all the push they crave. The comraderie among the five men is evident and these performances are incendiary!
