Virtuoso At Work

Johnny Griffin-
Live In France 1971

Johnny Griffin was a tenor saxophone virtuoso. He possessed a magnificent, even tone throughout the range of the tenor saxophone and the ability to navigate the fastest tunes and the most sophisticated chord changes with seemingly effortless precision. Toss in his soulfulness and inventiveness and you have a recipe for genius.

This DVD features two 1971 French concerts with Griff's quartet (pianist Vince Benedetti, bassist Alby Cullaz and drummer Art Taylor) and guest artist Dizzy Gillespie on Hot House and A Night In Tunisia. The band is on fire through bebop classics from Dameron, Dizzy, Monk and Charlie Parker as well as four of Griff's best known originals including Soft And Furry and The JAMFs Are Coming. Art Taylor's unrelenting swing drives this band to incredible heights.
