National Jazz Ensemble featuring Gerry Mulligan

Limited Edition

1 CD -  $17.98

Dot Time Records announces the second release in its "Legends" series entitled National Jazz Ensemble featuring Gerry Mulligan. This release is the first in a series of recordings by Chuck Israels and the National Jazz Ensemble (NJE). This CD documents the NJE's performance of the February 2nd, 1977 concert at the New School in NYC with guest soloist Gerry Mulligan. Mulligan had made himself scarce over the previous decade and everyone in attendance understood the importance of the event. This release captures all the excitement of this live concert in fine sound. Mulligan plays some amazing baritone solos while also adding some humor and warmth with his introductions. Mulligan plays on six of the nine tracks, drawing on compositions from various stages of his career. The NJE was an impressive ensemble under Israels' baton and the recording demonstrates the power and versatility of their collective. Thier perforamnces of "Evidence" and "Bird Tapestry" are breathtaking. The release also features beautifully written liner notes by David Berger, trumpeter, archivist and ensemble witness to that majestic night nearly 40 years ago.

Gerry was Scarce in Last Decade?
Not so. I saw him and spoke with him at Shellys in May 1973 and saw his concert at Royce Hall on Mothers Day 1975. He was vibrant and swinging hard. Rather catch him as the leader of the group but he still sounds great as a guest soloist.
