The Unmitigated Joy Of Boogie Woogie

When it comes to boogie woogie, Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Jimmy Yancey are the innovative pantheon and some of their finest performances are represented here. Later interpreters like Freddie Slack, Kenny Kersey, Teddy Wilson, and Mary Lou Williams are also included.

To compliment this unique art form, we've included some classic piano and vocal blues to the mix. In addition to blues masters Jimmy Yancey and Cripple Clarence Lofton (with guitarist Big Bill Broonzy), we've added the great blues shouter Joe Turner accompanied by Ammons, Lewis and Johnson as well as two almost forgotten OKeh sessions: Joe Sullivan's Café Society Orchestra and the Benny Carter All-Star Orchestra date.

These classic boogie woogie and blues piano sides recorded for Victor and Columbia during the years 1935 and 1941 are finally under one roof. Although many were initially released as singles and many were housed together in early album form, much of this material has never been issued on CD.

  Yeah Baby
Must be in every serious collection of music! Highly recommended!

Good introduction to Boogie Woogie in its heyday!
This is more of a grab bag than most Mosaic Select albums. Much of it has been previously available on vinyl. However, the mushy sound on the LP's due to the heavy left hands of the performers has been cleaned up very nicely by the remastering onto CD's. The Yancey and Lofton cuts (almost all of Disc 3) illustrate the early player's technique, while the younger artist's show why boogie woogie developed into a brief craze in the late 1930's. The Harry James and the band cuts are interesting because they show the ultimate and final stage of the this style. However, the music continues to infect many people when they first hear it, including those who claim to have no interest in jazz. You can't go wrong with this album even if you already have some of the performances. Don Seitas; Mill Valley,CA
