Mosaic Selects
Ltd. Edition 3 CD Sets
Running Low
“While Mosaic never does wrong, this set is absolutely perfect. Three CDs of Andrew Hill, almost all of it previously unheard by the public. While these sessions probably sat in the vaults to lack of commercial viability at the time, they are every bit as good as Hill's contemporary Blue Note releases that have been released. Some of the lineups are chock full of heavy hitter sidemen- Sam Rivers, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, etc. Overall the set is a good indicator of the diversity of Hill's compositonal ideas in the late 60s. He is heard in large group settings, trio settings, and most amazingly working with a string quartet. I find the string quartet sessions to be the most remarkable on the set.” - Customer Review
"A remarkable burst of creativity over a two week span. Of course the Chet Baker reunion is marvelous. The Vinnie Burke strings are a great complement to Mulligan. I have to admit I was a bit worried about it. To be honest, while I love Gerry, I really bought this set for the Annie Ross session. Just fantastic! Her version of "I Feel Pretty" was worth the price for me. Transcendent.” - Customer Review
“ I've been purchasing Mosaic sets since the 90s and this is among my top five. Tyner's vision comes into focus on these sessions--powerful piano, extended modal songs, Eastern influences, and beautiful melodies. Remastering is top-notch as are the sidemen throughout.” - Customer Review

“This is such a great session. It is still so surprising that this lineup of the Messengers is overlooked and underrated. This lineup deserves to be heralded as one of Blakey's best alongside the Golson/Morgan/Timmons/Merritt '58 and the Shorter/Hubbard/Fuller/Walton/Merritt or Workman '61-'64 lineups. And, of course, this set has all of Mosaic's usual exemplary production hallmarks.” - Customer Review
“ The mastering on this disc is fantastic. Excellent sonic clarity all around. That, combined with Lloyd's great sense of melody and forward-thinking songwriting make for a satifsying listening experience. Lloyd's cool and progressive style is a joy, and the interplay between all the band members is superb. Tony Williams was one of the funkiest jazz drummers around, too! Buy this and you will find yourself seeking out more Charles Lloyd. Not to be missed! ” - Customer Review

“Hey play that again…(later.) Yeah! He sounds like a piano player! (hums theme) …and he can play it; you know what’s happening with this one. Yeah, he was on a Bobby Timmons kick. He knows what’s happening.” - Thelonious Monk, Downbeat Blindfold Test, listening to Denny Zeitlin’s LP “Carnival”
Limited Edition
3 CDs - $44.00 |
Remarkably, whether he's playing an impressionistic ballad, a hard bop classic or a free original, Denny Zeitlin sounds like no other. He has the technique and harmonic knowledge to execute anything his fertile imagination conjures up. His music resonates with joy and honesty.
Denny Zeitlin's first album, Cathexis, recorded in 1964 with Cecil McBee and Freddie Waits was an instant critical and commercial success with Zeitlin hailed as a new and original voice of the piano. Later in 1964, Denny assembled another amazing trio with Charlie Haden and Jerry Granelli and released the album Carnival. Zeitgeist was recorded over 1966 and '67 and documented the end of the trio with Haden and Granelli and the beginning of one with Joe Halpin and Oliver Johnson, two brilliant musicians who died young.
These three magnificent studio albums have been gathered into one Mosaic Select with 12 previously unissued tunes from the sessions. Denny flew to New York to select the unissued material and remix all the music from the original 3- and 4-track tapes with Mark Wilder. The sonic results are a dramatic improvement over the original LPs.

"The Zeitlin trio…a stunning display of instrumental virtuosity, emotional depth, and musicality…Zeitlin's piano is impeccable…introspective, filled with joy, bitingly mocking, always intelligent and emotional." - Downbeat
"…among the few contemporary jazz pianists who have the imagination, discipline, and technique to rise above the competent but routine level that most of them appear willing to settle for." New York Times, John S. Wilson:
"(at the Monterey Jazz Festival) Denny Zeitlin topped his Newport triumph…pianist of the year…the most versatile young pianist to come to prominence in the early 1960's." Leonard Feather
"…I was again astounded by the breadth and depth of his imagination and expressiveness…Zeitlin is creating some of the most stimulating jazz of our time." San Francisco Examiner, Phillip Elwood:

| Thoughtful, intense music. The rhythm sections do justice to the pianist, first rate. | |
| trio fans | |
| The last review certainly sounds like an enthusiastic, thoughtful five star review. The reviewer simply has a stingy temperament. He sounds ok otherwise. Anyway, if you're a piano trio fan don't pass this one up. | |
| Good but.... | |
| I think people are too quick to hand out 5 stars in their reviews. I would reserve that for a session that burned from beginning to end and had all the other bits together (arrangements etc.). Those moments are uncommon for even the best musicians. I do, however, like this set very much and find it, as another reviewer asserted, very contemporary sounding. He does have an unusual approach to constructing his lines against the underlying harmonic structure of the tune that is unique in both in the chords he chooses and how the rhythms of his phrases are played out. His chops are certainly great and his ability to communicate is there consistently. How could this guy be in PhD program and be playing at that level simultaneously?? Lesser mortals brains would likely burst. He does not play at sublime levels throughout all of the tracks, but he always sounds good-never totally clinical, stilted or willful. My days of buying anything in sight are long gone, so I only purchase something that I know will probably either: break the mold and re-tweak my ears or be a true five star recording. This set represents the former rather than the latter and was well worth it. While my most of my boatloads of Lee Morgans gather dust, this is one set that has a freshness and originality that make me want to give it a go after the initial "exploration" of the set was done. This set is what Mosaic is about- unearthing this guy and the Carmell Joneses of the world. | |
| Mr. Z | |
| Intense, thoughtful playing. Nothing superficial about this set. Part of the pleasure is the rhythm sections that interact so subtley with Mr. Z - this is heady stuff. | |
| Oh my God is this good!! | |
| I bought this after hearing Body And Soul on Nightlights by David Brent Johnson last week and couldn't believe what I was hearing. I got it today and haven't even make it halfway through the first disk and am completely blown away at how inventive is. If you like piano trio, this is a must. If you like inventive chords and rhythms and chord progressions with reharmonizations galore you'll love this set of historic recordings of Zeitlin's. I knew very little of Zeitlin other than his wonderful Quiet Now composition I learned in college, but this opens up a different world of how great an artist he truly is. I had no idea. Thank you Denny and Mosaic. I will listen to this often and consider it one of my favorite lost-on-a-desert-island collections. MC P.S. I can't believe these are 1964 sessions!! | |

| The remastering is fabulous. I have a "Collectables" Cd with some of this boxset's music. There is no comparison in the sound. The bass and drums have been brought forward. The Columbia originals must have been excellent because the recordings sound like the present day ECM's. The new sound brings together the trios alive - no longer just a piano with muddy backing. | |
| Astounding!!! | |
| And to think that this was recorded in the 60's.....could've been recorded last week.....advanced everything yet firmly rooted and grounded. | |
| Surprise, indeed! | |
| Always liked that "Quiet Now" number by Denny Zeitlin performed by other jazz musicians now and then. His own records very hard to come by. Managed to purchase one at a street market in Berlin some time ago. So the reissue of his early Columbias was most welcome and ordered immediately. To my surprise the sound quality is absolutely excellent and most of the extra titles are well worth hearing. Don't care too much about some of the freakier numbers but when it comes to changing around well known standards nobody seems to do better. | |
| an outstanding surprise | |
| Upon seeing this Select announced I immediately planned on purchasing it.... However to my surprise, the additional material as well as the original releases........ are excellent.. Just full of power, space, variety and consistency. Sound quality is up to Mosaic's excellent standards... This one is a keeper! Great job folks... Looking forward to that Live at the Trident release... :) | |
| Hooray! | |
| I've loved these albums since I found them in a dingy used record store--thanks to you guys I can hear them in all their glory. And the music sounds as fresh and exciting as ever. | |
| TRUE PIANO GENIUS | |
| Whatever you play from Mr.Zeitlin is killer stuff!!!! Beautiful pianist!!!! | |
