Peter Brotzmann - European Avant-Garde Leader
In the ‘60s, Europe proved a haven for avant garde jazz artists such as Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry and Archie Shepp. By the ‘70s, a number of original voices emerged throughout Europe. Tenor saxophonist Peter Brotzmann was one of the leaders of the free jazz movement in Germany and a distinctive artist in his own right. Four representative tracks appear on The Wire’s website.
