Art Pepper –Rare Lighthouse Recordings
Marc Myers looks at the earliest phase of Art Pepper’s career with a couple of live recordings from the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California from late 1951 and January 1952 complete with two musical examples. While I’d disagree with his assertion that there is no Charlie Parker in his playing, Myers makes a case for Pepper being one of the earliest “West Coast jazz” artists in style and approach.
