The Silence That Sparked New Sounds
Historical hindsight is a lucid and easy vantage point, as Marc Myers beautifully organized accounting of the two recording bans in the ’40s foisted on the American public by James Petrillo, the Stalin of the American musicians’s union. As silly as some of the disagreements and component wars of the era seem today, one can only wonder how the childish actions of a simple-minded United States Congress at this moment in time will be viewed 10 or 40 years from now.
