Classic Brunswick & Columbia Teddy Wilson Sessions 1934-42
DISCOGRAPHY:

CLASSIC BRUNSWICK AND COLUMBIA TEDDY WILSON SESSIONS 1934-1942
For the purposes of this discography, only the first release of each matrix is listed. All titles in this discography were released initially on 78 except where noted. Non-U.S. releases are abbreviated (E) for England, (F) for France and (Sd) for Sweden.
To the best of our knowledge, this discography is presented
in the order in which each take was recorded. However, the CDs contained in
this set are sequenced with the master take first and then any alternates at
the conclusion of the disc except for Session (DD) which for the most part is a
previously unissued session that is better served to be heard chronologically.
Any sides that have been shown in discographies but are missing from the vaults
or possibly in private collections are listed as unissued, master no longer exists.
The
following reference materials used for this discography were the Johnny Simmen
articles in Bulletin du Hot Club de
France; The Jazz Discography by
Tom Lord (Cadence Jazz Books); The Jazz Oral History Project transcripts housed
at the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers; Jazz And Ragtime Records 1897-1942 (6th Edition) by
Brian Rust;and various Metronome and
Down Beat magazines from the period. Further research came from the original
ledgers and file cards from both the Brunswick and Columbia labels currently
housed at Sony Archives.
Label Abbreviations: Br for Brunswick, CCM for Collectors’ Choice Music, Col for Columbia, Dec for Decca, MOJ for Masters Of Jazz, NW for New World Records and Voc for Vocalion. Other abbreviations include alt for alternate take; BD for breakdown and reh for rehearsal.

unidentified rhythm is substituted for Cole. See the liner notes for more
information.

discographies list matrix LA 1405 as being released with -A on Brunswick 7954.

Note:
The correct order of performance for this session was determined by the
original 16” lacquer discs.
All
warm ups and rehearsal segments that come prior to issued takes are previously
unissued.
Matrices CCO 3687-2 and CCO 3687-3 are reversed on CBS (F) 66370 (LP).
On
CCO 3688-BD #2, there is some conversation between Teddy Wilson and the
Columbia sound engineer Bill Savory.
CBS
(F) 66370 has attached take numbers to matrix CCO3688 although there is no
confirmation from either the Columbia ledgers, file cards or the 16” lacquer
discs that these are indeed the actual take numbers except for -1 and -2 which
are visible on the lacquer discs.
Because
of time restraints on Disc VI, the first five takes of I Surrender Dear are
heard on Disc VI while the remainder are heard at the beginning of Disc VII.
Matrices
CCO 3689 thru 3692 were assigned to Orrin Tucker’s band on April 18, 1941.

Note:
The correct order of performance for this session was determined by the
original 16” lacquer discs.
Matrix
numbers were not allocated on the lacquer disc, the Columbia ledgers, nor on
the Columbia file cards for both the Teddy Wilson Original and Studio Doodling
(titles that were arbitrarily given for the release on CBS (F) 66370). Both
these “titles” occupy the reverse side of a lacquer disc that contain matrix CO
32282. (Matrices CO 32278 through 32281 were not assigned to any artist and
matrices CO 32283 and CO 32284 were allocated to recordings by Andre
Kostelanetz.)

Note:
The two previously unissued matrices of Stomp have been listed in discographies
as something to shout about<XC> (Parts 1 and 2) with vocals by
Helen Ward. However, stomp<XC> is the title found on two
shellac test pressings bearing these matrices and were brought to our attention
by collector Karsten Lohman. There is no title to be found on the metal parts. The
Columbia ledgers, however, show that a title was given as Something to Jump
About. In fact, it is possible that the actual title might be Jitterbug Stomp since
a reference is made in the September 15, 1942 issue of Down Beat that there’s a “two-part Jitterbug Stomp which has
recently been recorded by the Wilson band”. Wilson’s band was also featured in
the movie Something To Shout About
performing this piece.
Some
discographies and LP liner notes incorrectly list CO 33086-1 as being released
on Meritt 8 (LP).

Producer’s Note:
The
vision of this set was initially brought to our attention by solographer Jan
Evensmo. It is a gathering of Teddy Wilson’s 1934 to 1942 Brunswick and
Columbia sides under his leadership but without vocals by Billie Holiday since
these recordings have found their way onto countless LP and CD re-issues. And
since our contract with Sony Music called for this to be a 7 CD set, we have
regrettably needed to eliminate the following Teddy Wilson led recordings: On
Brunswick, both takes of I’ve Found A New Baby (these takes can be found on our
Count Basie/Lester Young set - MD8-263) and the May 14-15, 1936 and December
17, 1937 sessions that can be found on our Classic Columbia and Victor Chu
Berry set (MD7-236). We have also decided not to include five rare vocal
sessions that Wilson’s small group provided superb backing: Country singer Redd
Evans’ two sessions for Vocalion (April, 17, 1939 and August 11, 1939), one
session with Eddy Howard for Columbia (October 4, 1940) and two sessions with Chick
Bullock for the OKeh label (December 6, 1940 and February 12, 1941).
Although the sound quality of these sessions will differ from track to track, we have made every effort to obtain the best possible source material, whether it be the original metal parts, vinyl test pressings or commercially released 78s. Therefore, the CDs in this package include a variety of sources. However, the following discs presented problems that could not be eliminated in either the transfer or restoring process: Moments Like This -1, I Can’t Face the Music -1, and Laugh and Call It Love -2.
