Music of One of the Greatest Bop Players
That Few People Own.

Most of Tal Farlow's work as a leader was for Verve Records, and all of it is collected for the first time covering his work for the label from 1954 to 1959, when Farlow was at his peak. Much of it has been out of print for quite some time; very little of it has ever been available on CD in the U.S. (although much of it has been released on CD in Japan); and all of it is worth hearing again for the modernity of his approach, the musicality of his thought process, and the virtuosity of his technique.

When he began making recordings for the legendary perfectionist, Norman Granz, his personal style and technique were in full flower. These recordings for Verve are a clear example of why a wide variety of guitarists to this day cite Tal Farlow as a major influence. If it's solos that interest you, his are disarmingly original and technically brilliant. If you are a fan of the harmonic possibilities of the instrument, Farlow explores it fully. If the sheer sound of the guitar is something you enjoy, Farlow makes his sing like no one else.

And if it's just great music you're looking for, you'll find much to like. The seven CDs in this set include 99 tracks, many of them jazz classics and riffs on popular tunes. Trio and quartet dates predominate, but there are quintets, sextets and septet dates as well. We've even included one date from 1951 on Decca featuring the Red Norvo Trio of Norvo, Farlow and Red Mitchell.

For his innovations, his taste, and his tireless jazz explorations, Tal Farlow will be remembered. Thanks to this Mosaic release, he will also be heard.

"A fellow guitar player and I went to hear Tal and this guitar player said to me,"No wonder he can play so good, look at those long skinny fingers !" Well, I thought for a few moments and I said, "No, that's not right... Segovia had fat fingers and Django could only use two on his left hand." I said, "That kind of playing doesn't come from the fingers, that kind of playing comes from the heart and soul." -Johnny Smith, Guitarist

SAMPLE RECORDING SESSION

November 15th & 16th, 1954

Tal’s second record date for Norman Granz was recorded in Los Angeles with LA-based musicians, using the piano of Gerry Wiggins instead of a second guitar. He again draws mostly from the classic American songbook, with one original and an ad-lib blues thrown in. They start out with a Rodgers and Hart’s I Like To Recognize The Tune. After setting up the rhythm of the melody with Chico Hamilton’s brushes, Ray Brown plays the melody of the first eight, then Tal comes in for the second eight. His sound is richer and mellower than on the previous date for Granz. He spins four choruses supported by Wiggins’ comping, slowly building in intensity, before taking it out with a short ending. Then comes a bright Strike Up The Band, starting and ending with the ominous sounding verse. Again Tal is the only soloist.

For Autumn In New York, Tal tunes his fifth (A) string down an octave, extending the bass range of his guitar as low as the seven string guitar used by George Van Eps. This enables him to play a rubato and harmonically rich solo chorus first, playing two more choruses with the rhythm section. This track attracted so much attention that some re-releases of this album were entitled Autumn In New York rather than the original The Artistry of Tal Farlow.

And She Remembers Me is an original very loosely based on I’ll Remember April. On the blowing, Tal improvises on the exact chord changes of that tune, propelled by Chico Hamilton’s tasteful brushwork. He ends the tune with a long improvised cadenza before coming to a stop. Then back to Rodgers and Hart for Little Girl Blue. This is given a gentle chordal reading, with some harmonics brushed with the palm of the right hand occasionally thrown in. On the rubato solo guitar interlude, we become aware that Tal is using the guitar with the fifth string down an octave again, providing some rich chordal sounds. Another Rodgers and Hart classic, Have You Met Miss Jones? follows, featuring a couple of choruses from Gerry Wiggins inbetween Tal’s articulate up-tempo blowing.

Gerry Wiggins set’s the mood for Tal’s Blues with two swinging choruses before Tal comes in with a nice mixture of laid-back, funky guitar phrases and double time figures. We hear from Ray Brown also before Tal returns for more, eventually settling into the riff that closes the performance. The session ends with Cherokee, played at a breakneck tempo, starting with just Tal and Ray, and ending that way as well.

  Haters of Mosaic!!!
Nice package for people who are not totally engrossed in finding unearthed material in Japan! It is a nice clean Tal Farlow! I am not a collector! Those guys got Issues!Thank you Mosaic for making this and Other Artist available to us regular peeps!

One of the greats guitar players
I've got it two years before and I think this is one of the most important sets in my music library!Great player, great collection, great accomplishment!

  Fast Company
I've had the Tal Farlow set for about 6 months and have especially enjoyed listening to the range of settings Tal plays in, from trio to multi- horn bands. Very enjoyable set, check out the the discography and the line-up of musicians he plays with - fast company, indeed.

Irrespective of whether it's available elsewhere or not...
I just didn't find much of interest on this set. Obviously mine is a minority view here (and I just don't care if this material has or has not been released on another label before, so my opinion of the music is in no way influenced by the irrelevant arguments below). Adding up all of the material on this set that I could muster some enthusiasm for would amount to one (short) CD. If you're contemplating the purchase of this set, try to grab a listen somewhere first. If you find it's your thing then this set provides a feast.

  Republicans?--come ON!
I'm above all a musician(amateur but serious) notwithstanding my reactionary political bent. Trust me when I tell you that Tal's artistry is perceived as acutely by Republicans or Democrats. All they need is musical acuity. Farlow not only rules--he reigns!!! Ed

  New Dimensions
The sound quality on this set is fantastic. The nuances of Farlow's playing is brought forward which is a big part of his style. Much better sound than the old Verve recordings that I own - brings another dimension to the music. This is a very rich set with an extraordinary list of sidemen. The intensity of the Farlow/Costa/Burke trio sides is the highlight of the set and places Farlow up there with anyone, including the likes of Chuck Wayne and Johnny Smith.

  My Set
Fantastic set of music. I play it. I love it. All the rest is irrelevant to me.

  Other sets
You get what you pay for in this situation. If you want an inferior selection, inferior sound, inferior liner notes, and inferior packaging - go ahead buy elsewhere. I don't see how buying knock-offs is supporting an artist or the future of jazz. Atlantic? Doesn't sound accurate to me.

Great music BUT you can get it elsewhere
First, let me state that I love Tal Farlow's playing almost more than any other player, on any instrument. But this identical box set is now widely available on Atlantic, I believe. It's good to support Mosaic, but more important to support the artist, even if he has passed on. So shop around, and save yourself $60.00.

  Republican and a Jazz Fan
I take EXCEPTION to "Tal is God". A person can be both....Oh yeah, the set is excellent. I'd give it more stars if it was allowed.

Mario Borroni 01460 Mornay France.

  Reviews Are For Music
I write only for the purpose of saying once and for all that reviews - here and everywhere else - should only address the music and the accompanying production. When readers see one or two stars for this set, they may be misled for the wrong reasons. It does not help anyone to read complaints about Mosaic's truthfulness as to what has been released before. It's worth knowing what's out-of-print, but let's not give Tal a sub-par rating for the petty reason that some of the cds are available in the form of Japanese imports. Focus on what's important - reviews are there to educate music fans, not to feature the irrelevant complaints of disgruntled listeners. By the way, Tal Farlow's Verve recordings are sensational and are a serious 'must'.

  Cloud 9
Although Tal's traded in his guitar for a harp, the availability of these LPs in one place is a delight (ignore the moaning minnies that have complained about much of this having been issued in Japan). Well done Mosaic. A fine testament to the Artistry of Tal Farlow...

tal farlow is alive and well
i am utterly speechless. un believable

  long overdue.....
great to have all this Tal in one place, a comprehensive collection indeed. Seems like not-so-long ago, it was very hard to find any old Tal stuff. Cannot fault Mosaic in any way. They have the right to advertise their product; finding all this stuff on individual cds would be an arduous, expensive task. Japanese cds can cost $30 or more. Focus on the music, the set... All Music gives this a 4 1/2 star rating and I agree... we all have our favorites, music is very democratic... plenty of super-duper highlights here... some don't love Tal, some prefer Wes, Grant Green, whoever... if you like Tal, you will be very happy with this, if curious about Tal, start elsewhere with a single cd, then get this... submitted by Eddie Lee

Great Set! Great Musician! Tal is one of the best!
Like many of you out there, I owned a number of the cd's that were reissued. It's always great to own a set that has everything in it. The Complete Tal Farlow on Verve is no exception! For his amazing dexterity and feeling, Tal Farlow is simply one of the greatest jazz guitarist ever! From what I've read and heard, many cite Tal as an influence. It's tough being in New York during the 50's and not absorb all of the great music that was being played. Tal was no expception! Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, many more great instrumentalist pointed the way for guitarist such as Tal and many others. When one listens to this set, one not only hears a great musician, one hears the influence of the era that inspired such great recordings. It's important to listen to this set from that perspective!

  Triumph
I have my doubts about the diety, mental health, and Republican comments- but it is certainly another Mosaic triumph to have made this music available to the world in such a fine fashion. Thank you Mosaic.

  Tal is God...
As an aspiring jazz guitarist, I have to say that this is more than just another Mosaic collection to me -- this is what jazz guitar playing is all about. Soul, thoughtfulness and ideas that come faster to Tal than can reasonably be understood, his playing approaches the superhuman, and not just for the avalanche of notes. He never stumbles, or seems to run out of ideas. And while his technique is stunning, it's his feeling that comes across more than anything. You don't play like this consistantly without having some serious soulfulness. As for the whiners and complainers on this page, all I can say is I could care less whether this has been out on CD in Japan or not. I'll be lucky to ever even see one of those imports, let alone pay for them. I feel fortunate that a company like Mosaic exists for us jazz lovers -- and musicians. As for some of the other morons on this page, well they must be mentally ill or Republicans. Long live Tal! Long live Mosaic! Jazzbo

  Highly Recommended!
Eventhough the material has been issued before, it's so nice to have these vintage Tal Farlow Verve albums all in one package. I never have bought any of Tal's album before (!!!) so I really do like this set, especially for the two sessions with Burke and Costa. Tal had it all, and his artistry shined. All the consummate side men were performing very well. This set is highly recommended!

  Superb groups
Ignore the arguing fools - this is one of my favorite Mosaic box sets. I particularly like the Farlow/Costa/Burke trio sides for how well they play together as a unit. This is a very rich set with superb groups, one right after another.

  Just Great
Great guitarist. Great set. Truly Mosaic is on a roll - keep those guitar sets coming!! Jimmy Raney? Chuck Wayne? Atilla Zoller?

  Phenomenal
Unbelievable playing and a great package. Thanks Mosaic!

  Slag?
Not sure what "slag" means, but the issue is with Mosaic flat-out misrepresenting the set. Scroll up, guys--you see where it says "very little of this has been issued on cd"? See that? That's a flat-out falsehood. Nearly all of this has been out before. That's what I take issue with. Sure, it's much more convenient to have it all in one set--even cheaper than buying the Japanese cd issues, but why lie? Mosaic sets are good enough that they don't need to be artificially pumped up with false advertising? Got it? It's not rocket science. Scroll up and see for yourself.

I wish I could play like that.
These are not reviews. This is sour grapes. Why on earth slag Mosaic for releasing this set? If you want to buy the Japanese imports separately, go ahead. If you would rather listen to Lenny Breau, be my guest. I still trust Oscar Petersons view about Norman Granz. I searched reviews of other Mosaic sets I own and found very few negative reviews. What the hell? I listened to the first 3 discs from the Farlow set last night and have had more enjoyment from them already than from all my listening of my Pass and Smith sets. I love Breau and Pass, (not big on Smith) and now I have another great guitar players work and another fine Mosaic collection on my shelf. If you are interested in exciting bop guitar the Tal Farlow Mosaic is a good investment. Alan

  Puzzled
I don't get it - this is a bad thing that 7 CDs of Tal Farlow has been released? That they've been remastered and sound better than ever before? That I don't have to order Japanese imports to hear the music? That Tal Farlow's music is being presented in a high quality production, including extensive liner notes and details about the music and the sessions???

  Ugh
It used to be that Mosaic dug up long-forgotten treasures--tracks you would probably never hear otherwise, but now they are just recycling the same old stuff that is going around and around. First a Django Reinhardt set--as if there haven't been dozens of repackagings of that stuff, and now the same with Tal. Give us something new--something we wouldn't get otherwise. All that vault access and this is what they come up with? As each year passes, the jazz canon gets whittled down. Eventually it will just be Bird, Billie, Ellington, etcetera. Get back to the unsung heroes, and leave the mainstream releases to the folks that are already putting them out. How about some never-released Lenny Breau? He was head and shoulders above these guys. Tal bowed to him, and Tal's sloppy artificial harmonic work is childlike and soulless compared to Lenny's. Mosaic must have been purchased by Columbia or RCA...

Why not when Tal was alive?
It's too bad you didn't do this when Tal was alive--he could have used some of the dough. Is his estate getting anything out of this? You guys are worse than Norman Granz.

  The Swinginest Tal
Although some complain that Japanese CD reissues of many of the albums have been available, this set has ALL the Verve material for less than the cost of a complete set of those $38.00 imports. What should Mosaic have done, not put the set out? I've been begging for this set for years, as have others. Anyway, this is the holy grail of jazz guitar, as Howard Alden says in the liner notes, and Mosaic is to be commended for paying attention to the great jazz guitarists, such as Lang, Django, Green, Pass, Smith and now Tal. Tal just surfs through the changes like nobody's business on the medium and up tempo cuts. I can listen to this stuff over and over.

Tal on Verve complete At Last
Fantasic to have all the Verve Tal Farlow in one set [and for the price of only 3 or 4 lp length imports we get 7 packed cd's with alternate takes and unissued tracks or stuff only issued on old lp's such as Poppin' and Burnin' ] This is the definative Tal Farlow. Now that you've done guitarist sets on Grant Green,Johnny Smith and Joe Pass in addition to Tal, How about giving the Moasic select treatment to the ABC Paramount recordings of Jimmy Raney ?

  two day marathon
I've been collecting Mosaic sets since the very beginning and own about half of them. But never before have I felt compelled to sit and listen to a complete set of 7 CD's over the course of two days. This set was that enjoyable and consistent. One of my favorites.

  Poor Mosaic...
Let's get one thing straight, first: Tal was one of the greats. He was overrecorded by Verve, however, and while the Verve stuff has its moments, there is plenty of filler. The real story here, however, is why Mosaic Records chose to outright lie and deceive people with the absurd notion that "little of this material has been avaialable on cd before". WRONG! Nearly all of this stuff has been out on great Japanese CD issues, with complete artwork and liner notes. The Japanese have and will probably always do it better. Why didn't Mosaic just go the honest route and say "Look, this stuff has almost all been out before, but we've put it in a tidy set and given you a nice booklet"? Oh well. Maybe they aren't the discographical researchers they once were. Maybe they are revisionists now. Who knows?
