"Great soloing, arranging and section work om material that includes older standards and Watermelon Man make this essential." - Duck Baker, Coda |
Woody Herman made more than his share of great live albums in his lifetime, but this 1965 remote from Basin Street West in San Francisco was one of his best. It not only produced Woody's Winners, but three more titles appeared on Woody Live East And West and another five appeared on Jazz Hoot. Now all 16 performances are gathered on this one CD for the first time, newly remixed from the original three-track tapes.
The '65 Herd was driven relentlessly by drummer Ronnie Zito in the great Woody Herman tradition of swinging hard! Soloists include trumpeters Bill Chase and Bobby Shew, tenor saxophonists Sal Nistico and Andy McGhee and trombonist Henry Southall.
The material is blend of new originals by Chase, Don Rader and Bill Holman along with great tunes from various past herds. Highlights include blistering performances of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" and Oscar Peterson's "Hallelujah Time" as well as Nat Pierce arrangements on two Horace Silver classics.

| The Penguin Guide to Jazz (1994 edition) describes 'Woody's Winners'as follows : "For sheer excitement this is in a class of its own, one of the greatest big-band records ever made." I can only enthusiastically second this comment. The review also says "the sound was never in the highest fidelity even on original vinyl" I am very pleased to compliment Mosaic on the excellent sound quality of this CD - beautifully balanced with the different sections of the band clearly enunciated and soloists standing out perfectly.Wonderful! | |
| A classic big band album | |
| This is a very welcome and long overdue release of a classic big band album. An ideal companion would be the complete Phillips recordings of Woody Herman from the same golden era (Mosaic please note). A pity, though, that Mosaic didn't didn't rearrange the cuts on Woody's Winners, rather than just tack on the extra tracks. Opus De Funk and Woody's concluding remarks logically should have ended the whole expanded album. | |
