Massive Set of Small Group
V-Disc Sessions
This set collects some of the finest small-group jazz of the artistically turbulent Forties in collaborations that would not have happened otherwise. The V-Disc program did not record every important jazz artist active in those years, but they captured a great deal. These sessions are a fascinating cross-section of small-group jazz, with stars and some musicians never found in jazz history books.
By focusing on small groups and great solos, Mosaic has put together a collection that is more focused and pure than some varied and almost-random V-Disc sets that have appeared over the years, as well as more expansive than the one-or-two CD collections that concentrated on a more narrow set of artists.
These are the artists who would have been appearing on 52nd Street or clubs in LA, as well as superstars who would have beamed into soldiers’ living room radios if they had been home. There couldn’t be a more comprehensive collection of music from these years, much of which would have been lost without these musical documents.
Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions
Every one of us can name a song, an artist, a live event, where the music we were hearing touched us emotionally in ways that had never occurred before, might never be duplicated, and could scarcely be described.
For many of the men and women in uniform who served in World War II, that music came from V-Discs. At a time when commercial recording was halted because of a union-mandated recording ban, and service men and women were separated worlds away from anything familiar or comforting, V-Discs brought a touch of home. A reminder of happier times. And a belief that ahead of them was a normal life beyond the isolation, deprivation, and chaos that is war.
Nothing brings us more pleasure at Mosaic than pointing the spotlight at an under-appreciated or forgotten artist, era, genre, or collection, and we are delighted that light has landed on V-Disc, not only for the role they played in bolstering morale, but for the sheer breadth, joy, and quality of the music.
A unique time in history, and in music
“Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” is a goldmine of traditional, swing and bop performances, recorded specifically for the V-Disc program, in a variety of solo piano and small group band settings from 1943-1949 on 11 CDs.
The tracks reveal what musicians were up to when the public-at-large was cut off from new recorded music, as well as giving musicians a chance to work with each other in groupings that would otherwise have been impossible because of their exclusive label contracts. And since V-Disc were released on 12” discs, recording times extend beyond the limits of typical recording sessions. Musicians could stretch out as never before.
Bold, Lively Renditions
Most of the tunes were chosen to promote an upbeat, positive reaction, and many succeeded beyond expectations.
The December 6, 1944 session is a gem among the V-Disc sessions, and includes one surprise appearance. Louis Armstrong was performing elsewhere in New York and decided — after midnight — to drop in on the V-Disc session underway at NBC. The date, which also features Jack Teagarden, Hot Lips Page, Ernie Caceres, Bobby Hackett, and others, is a model of unbridled creativity, sympathetic soloing, and the joy music can bring.
Notable songs from the date include “Jack Armstrong Blues” featuring Louis and the “Sheik of Araby” with blistering solos by Page, tenor man Nick Caiazza, Caceres, Teagarden, Lou McGarity and Johnny Guarnieri, with flawless support from Al Hall on bass.
Other standouts include:
• A soaring set from Sidney Bechet and Vic Dickenson.
• Thrills from Wild Bill Davison.
• Joe Bushkin in tastefully familiar territory with Bobby Hackett.
• A stand-out session from Hackett on his own.
•An outstanding modern session from bassist and arranger Bob Haggart.
• Fats Waller recording a lively set.
• Boogie master Meade Lux Lewis.
• Art Tatum creating multi-dimensional tapestries.
The list goes on: Connie Boswell’s warm vocals layered over Allen Hanlon’s guitar playing would have sent any GI off to sweet slumber, no matter how uncomfortable the bunk. Muggsy Spanier, Eddie Condon, Bud Freeman, Bunk Johnson and an all-star Bob Crosby Bobcat date (with Martha Tilton) are all well represented, as are blues drenched Jo Stafford vocals in front of Billy Butterfield and McGarity.
And we haven’t even mentioned Nat King Cole, John Kirby, Roy Eldridge, Teddy Wilson, Woody Herman, Gene Krupa, Red Norvo, Mildred Bailey, Clark Terry, Buddy Rich, Ella Fitzgerald, Hazel Scott, and Lennie Tristano.
A Collection Like No Other
The set contains a massive 220 cuts, 9 of which have never been released in any form, from original V-Discs, tape recordings, and air checks. Even tracks that did find their way onto commercial recordings are only on LPs and CDs that are hard-to-come-by. Needless to say, every track has been given the Mosaic treatment, with better sound quality than any previous release.
Our deluxe box set includes a substantial booklet with historical details and track breakdowns, vintage photographs, and a complete (and corrected!) discography from all the included sessions. Liner notes and session notes are by Michael Steinman who has been researching and writing about jazz ever since he fell in love with Louis Armstrong’s music as a child.

Meticulous Audio Restoration
Once again, the team at Swan Studios, Andreas Meyer, Nancy Conforti and Shane Carroll, have worked magic. The process of taking older recordings and reducing the surface noise without sacrificing the quality of the music is exactly what was accomplished with our latest offering; Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions.
The process begins with finding the cleanest copies of the original 78 rpm records and even the original glass master discs to be transferred. Mosaic Records obtained these by throwing out a large net to be cast out to collectors all over the world who came to lend their gems out to us. Once received, the discs are professionally cleaned (via a Keith Monk machine) and then a collection of various styli (needles), each one varied in depth to capture the most signal from the walls of the grooves. They also center the recordings, make sure the pitch is correct and then once the transfer is made, Andreas and the team restore the music from the electronic file captured from the transfer.

This session is justly famous, not only for the superb small-group sound but also for memorable playing by Ben Webster (1909-1973), who had recorded with Woody’s band in November 1943 and January 1944. More of “the real Ben” begins John Hardy’s Wife, then Bill Harris, immediately recognizable as he draws on the history of jazz trombone playing. Ben returns, hollering exuberantly, getting more excited, until we have the touching spectacle of a great soloist climbing to the peak and not being able to get down. What a magnificently human interlude, and how wonderful it was issued.

Roy Eldridge explodes on Tea For Two before Trummy Young enters with his characteristic behind-the-beat way. Rowland, sounding like Johnny Guarnieri, and Stegmeyer, typically lyrical, give way to a heated Eldridge (with an interlude for Alpert) before Roy, Specs Powell, and Trummy take over, ferociously jamming. A “Hot Eight” for sure.
Art Tatum
Spoken Intro & She’s Funny That Way
What strikes me now, after years of listening to Art Tatum, is his immense playfulness, the joy of a magnificent artist who can indeed “think of everything” and then make it happen immediately as the music pulses on, bar by bar and chorus by chorus. These performances need to be listened to one at a time, or else they become the most elaborate background music, as the senses get overwhelmed.
Producer Norman Granz (1918-2001) deserves credit for recording Tatum without restriction in the final years of his life, but these V-Disc sessions are earlier examples of him being given the freedom of longer playing time and exploring every possibility of his chosen repertoire as a result.

we would still bow down in reverent gratitude.
Sometime after midnight, Louis Armstrong, then appearing with his uninspiring big band at Club Zanzibar, walked, unannounced, into Studio 8-H at NBC. Everything stopped in mid-phrase.
Everything was going along swell. Suddenly somebody spied Louis entering the studio. Guys like Teagarden and Butterfield and Hackett and McGarity and Cozy and Johnny Guarnieri were running through a fast blues, rehearsing it before the take.
But when Louis entered they all stopped—automatically. They greeted him, they watched him take off his coat, unpack his horn. And they kept sitting and standing there, not blowing a note, as he warmed up. Then he joined them and right then was the first time in my life I’d ever heard the Real Armstrong in person. I’ve never heard anything like that in all of my days. The way he blew! The feeling, the tone, the phrasing, the heart! It was something that just doesn’t come out of anybody else’s horn.
When it was over and Louis had rushed back to the Zanzibar, I realized that I wasn’t the only one who felt the way I did: completely knocked out. Somebody asked Billy Butterfield to play something with the rest of the band backing him. The idea was to feature each of the stars on the date. But Billy absolutely refused, refused several times . . . [he] wouldn’t even think of playing . . . . Bobby Hackett . . . went around muttering something like “they’re all fakes, all of ‘em. For the purposes of this discography, only the first release of each matrix is listed and shown as originally released on 78 except where noted. To the best of our knowledge, we have presented the discography chronologically. This information comes from either the V-Disc discography by Richard Sears and / or the original 16” master discs. However, the CDs will be presented with an introduction by the leader (if one was recorded) at the top of the session and as a separate track unless where noted.
The matrix numbers found in the wax were originally designated to provide various information on the massive amount of material being used for release of these V-Discs. These letters and numbers indicate year of issue, a governmental V-Disc account, the size of the disc, the number of the pressings for a given year, and the number of masters used for pressing of a given title. We have decided to include only the letters that designate the men involved with the V-Disc program: JDB (for Tony Janak, Keith Davis and Frank Bruno); JB (for Janak and Bruno); and J (for Janak only). It is still a mystery as to what the VP designation stood for.
Titles that are shown in italics, whether they have been issued or still remain unissued, are not included in this set.

A V-Disc test pressing of If You’re A Viper carries the matrix VP-414 in the run-off area of the disc. However, VP-419 is what’s handwritten on the label and a notation that VP-414 is “wrong”. Copies of these pressings are all the same and no alternate takes have been found. This holds true for the Jolly Roger 78 and other Lp re-issues. In fact, these Lp re-issues use the Jolly Roger 78 as a source since during Waller’s spoken intro was edited to eliminate “V” when he says, “…left the V-Disc studios…”. A later V-Disc test pressing uses the matrix J609-UBS 1039 and, again, they are the same recording.
Some discographies list By The Light Of The Silvery Moon on Stash STCD539 (CD) as being from this session but it is actually from a George Jessel radio program.
It is not known if the unissued masters still exist. If matrix VP-156 still exists as a test pressing it is probably a compilation of the other titles heard in this session.

Producer’s Note: The recordings in this set were made exclusively for the V-Disc label. V-Discs that contain radio broadcasts, concerts and/or recordings made exclusively for other labels, whether they be commercially released 78s or previously unissued masters, are not included here. This also excludes the NBC Monday night broadcasts titled “For The Record” which starred specific V-Disc artists.
The sound quality will differ from track to track because of the different source material we had available for us to transfer. Due to space limitations we had to eliminate many sessions that were initially chosen for this set since they have very little or no jazz content. Others were eliminated because they are basically arranged performances with no or very little improvisation (like the Joe Marsala date from August 1947). We are hoping to release a set of big band V-Discs in addition to one of Benny Goodman’s V-Discs, so those were eliminated from this set as well.

Discographies list Ain’t We Got Fun by Peanuts Hucko from December 9, 1947 and issued on V-Disc 850 as a special V-Disc session but it carries a Columbia matrix and is considered a Columbia date.
The Nat Jaffe, V-Disc All Star Jam Session and Trummy Young V-Disc sessions can be found on our Don Byas boxed set and as of 2024 is still in print.
Discographies list Can’t We Be Friends by John Kirby and his Orchestra on V-Disc 883 but this is the common release found on Columbia.
V-Disc 286 (Army) and V-Disc 66 (Navy) have been listed in discographies as a King Cole Trio session for V-Disc, however, these two titles (All For You and I Can’t See For Lookin’) are the common sides found on Capitol.
Regardless of a spoken introduction by Fats Waller prior to That Ain’t Right on V-Disc 165, this is not from a V-Disc session but rather from the soundtrack of the 20th Century Fox movie Stormy Weather. The introduction was initially used for You’re A Viper.
