The John Coltrane Quartet with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones was formed in October 1960 with Jimmy Garrison assuming the bass chair a year or so later. This band set out on a remarkable creative evolution from day one. They embarked on this path in full public view and it remains one of the most extra-ordinary periods of growth and innovation in jazz. Here were four virtuosic geniuses who redefined their instruments and forged a wholenew ensemble sound.
Every night this band played was a major event and spiritual experience for those who witnessed it. What made their performances of July 27 & 28, 1965 even more important was the first and possibly only public performances of Ascension (which they had recorded exactly one month earlier with seven additional musicians) and A Love Supreme which they’d recorded eight months earlier and had become an instant and influential hit in the jazz world.

What made their performances of July 27 & 28, 1965 even more important was the first and possibly only public performances of Ascension (which they had recorded exactly one month earlier with seven additional musicians) and A Love Supreme which they’d recorded eight months earlier and had become an instant and influential hit in the jazz world.
Naima, a searingly intense Ascension and Impressions come from the first day. Part one and half of part two of the suite A Love Supreme were taped on the second day. Unfortunately the footage for the rest of the suite has not survived.
The quartet is at the peak of their powers and in great form (I’m not sure they ever weren’t) on this historically significant and powerful video.
Over the course of 50 years of hearing plenty of live music, nothing I've experienced has surpassed the many occasions on which I was lucky enough to hear the John Coltrane Quartet at Birdland or The Half Note. Often Coltrane would start off playing the brief melody of one of the triple-meter pieces he favored and leave the stage as McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones built the intensity gradually with chorus after chorus until Elvin's thunderous quarter- note triplets on the bass drum would announce Coltrane's soaring return. For the next hour or more, these men would take us to a place that was as deep in spirituality as it was charged with sexual energy. For me, nothing has come close to what they achieved nightly.
