"With a full, fat tone, Tolliver with Stanley Cowell, Cecil McBee and Jimmy Hopps drive and twist through over an hour and a half of origninal music at Slugs'...The concert in Japan with Houston and Barbaro is possibly even more aggressive and adventurous. Added to the original material is a blistering original dedicated to John Coltrane that is 20 minutes of pure intense creativity." - George Harris, All About Jazz |
Charles Tolliver emerged in 1965 as a strong and innovative trumpeter and composer. Hard bop was riding strong and welcoming adventurous new voices. After important tenures with Jackie McLean, Gerald Wilson, Max Roach and Andrew Hill, Tolliver formed his own quartet, which he dubbed Music Inc.
A quartet is a demanding setting for a trumpeter, but Tolliver was never at a loss for chops or ideas. He recorded the band live at Slug's in New York in 1970 and at a Tokyo concert in 1973 for his own Strata-East label. These have long since become collectors' items and are now being reissued with 41 minutes of unissued material from Slug's and 34 minutes from Tokyo.
Stanley Cowell is the pianist (and contributing composer) throughout. Cecil McBee and Jimmy Hopps are on the Slug's session while Clint Houston and Clifford Barbaro are on the Japanese concert. With the exception of Neal Hefti's "Repetition" and Monk's "'Round Midnight", the band's book consisted of the exceptional originals by Tolliver, Cowell and McBee.
The musicians in Music, Inc challenged each other but never left the audience behind. This was state-of-the-art hard bop played in all its diversity from harmonically dense mazes to modal open forms to gorgeous ballads. And these men could sustain interest with each other and the listener through sheer creative power.
As the music on this set proves, Tolliver's Music Inc met every challenge and then some. These live recordings from 1970 and '73 embrace hard bop in all its various approaches and epitomize the teamwork that is so essential to any successful jazz performance. And Charles's endurance is absolutely remarkable

| Tolliver at his very best | |
| a great collection of music by one of the most underated trumpeters in jazz, great solos by everybody I really like disc 3, I'm happy he made that music available to the public if you like Woody Shaw you'll like C.T. Check him out in a big band setting as well one of the best still out there thats for sure! | |

| No one has ever combined ferocity and beauty quite like Tolliver. The trumpet player's artistry is at it's infectious high point as this majestic set offers one stirring moment after another. | |
| Solid Music | |
| I have been truly enjoying these vastly improved recordings since I bought them a while ago. Yes, like others I can hear John Coltrane's influence but unlike one of the reviewers I think the absence of a saxophone player always made Tolliver's groups the better for it. His trumpet playing certainly does not require a saxophone, not with Cowell at the keyboard. They made a superb team. This is solid music, which remains highly enjoyable after repeated listening. Mosaic has done a grand job here. | |
| Great music ! | |
| I have two of Tollivers Lp's "Paper Man " & "The Ringer" on Arista/Freedom . I've love playing them from time to time. He and Woody Shaw are among my favorite trumpet players. These line-ups a solid state on this box set.Great jazz as always from Mosaic. | |
| Superb | |
| I've just received my box set (No 3905) and the musicianship and compositions on the 3 CD's are truly awesome. As usual, the package is beautifully presented by Mosaic -- I hope this leads the way to the remainder of the Strata-East catalogue being made available soon. In the meantime, buy this wonderful collection while you can! | |
| Great Jazz | |
| This is jazz at its best. More of Tolliver's classical music should be made available. More important: Tolliver's present music (big band and combo) should be distributed in the jazz world. There is nothing better. | |
| More Tolliver, please! | |
| Great songs, all the material very much inspired by Coltrane's 'classic' quartet. I particularly sometimes miss the sound of a saxophone, though... For example, listen to the live version of 'On the Nile', first recorded by Mr. Tolliver with Mr. Jackie Mclean, well, maybe I just got used to that version... Apart from that, great stuff. Now I would definetely like to hear the studio recordings of these quartets. About the previous reviewer's complaint regarding the sound from the Tokyo concert: disc 2 is the original concert, with a fairly decent sound, which sort of resembles the Coltrane live recordings from Tokyo in 66, although this one is in stereo. I believe he is complaining about the last 3 songs from disc 3, which have been transferred from a video tape, but I rather take these last songs as a treat from Mr. Tolliver's private collection. All in all, great jazz - " half-free, half-straight ahead. Or maybe thirty precent free to 70 percent straight ahead, mainstream - I don't know. Everything had a structure, but we could take the music any way we felt." Charles Tolliver | |
| Excellent Set | |
| Great music from the mid-seventies when jazz was supposedly dead. Nice tunes in the modal style and inspired interaction among the band. The music from Slugs is the high point. Drummer Jimmy Hopps is a revelation. How come I'd never heard of this guy? If you like Woody Shaw you'll definitely dig this. Like Shaw's "Stepping Stones" this should let the jazz pundits know that fusion wasn't the only thing happening in the '70's. Minus 1 star for the sound on the Japan set but the playing more than makes up for it! | |
| Great Musicians, great music !!! | |
| Today this music is also fresh and hot like 35 years ago. Your re-release is great and deserves five stars !!! | |
| Great Trumpets | |
| I have the 3 lps; finally we could have the chance of hearing this magnificent group in more decent sound! And more music added. Now we are waiting for some more Woody Shaw. | |
